Rising Northeast: India's Next Growth Frontier

India’s Northeast was once, for decades, a distant frontier, far away and remote. It is today a ray of hope, strength, and growth. Over the past eleven years, a focused vision of inclusive development, through the able stewardship of the government’s “Act East” and “Transformation by Transportation” initiatives, has rewritten the region’s destiny, putting it firmly in the national as well as global spotlight.

This has been driven by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER). Strategic investment in infrastructure, social development, and economic capacity has transformed erstwhile challenges into opportunities for Global Growth. Roads, railways, airports, Ro-Ro waterway services, and hydroelectric projects are no longer dreams, reality driving connectivity and integration in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. Bogibeel Bridge, extension of the Mizoram railway network, and ten greenfield airports are symbolic projects reflecting the dawn of a new era in the accessibility of the region.

Peace and Security: Growth Through Stability

Growth cannot flourish if peace is not present. The Northeast has long been ravaged by decades of internal security troubles, but a chain of landmark peace deals, starting with the Framework Agreement with NSCN(IM) in 2015 and concluding with the NLFT and ATTF Peace Agreement of 2024, has brought a more peaceful environment to citizens and investors alike. Reducing extremist activities, slow demilitarization, and resolution of inter-state disputes are a testament to the government’s multi-faceted approach, where growth and security reinforce each other.

Stimulating Economic Growth

Now, the Northeast’s potential is visible to the world. Schemes such as Uttar Poorva Transformative Industrialization Scheme or UNNATI-2024 and Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for the North East or PM-DevINE are re-shaping the region as an investment-friendly system. With the calibrated support and incentives to new and existing industries, the Northeast is drawing domestic as well as global players.

The May 2025 Rising North East Investors Summit further strengthened this momentum by convening delegations of over 80 countries and generating investment interest of ₹4.3 lakh crore. With a target-oriented task force driving tourism, agriculture, sports, handlooms, and dairy production, Northeast is turning into an innovation, entrepreneurship, and local self-reliance hub.

Agriculture, Forestry, and Livelihoods

Government interventions are providing sustainable livelihoods and promoting organic and value-added farming. Mission Organic Value Chain Development, Van Dhan Vikas Yojana, and programs such as the Agarwood Steering Group are converting farmers and tribal foragers into entrepreneurs. The North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) has diversified its product basket from 38 to more than 75 products, with the inclusion of organic tea, sumac berry powder, and Outenga juice. Bee-keeping initiatives and agri-skilling projects are empowering local people while increasing the Northeast’s national and international significance.

Social Development: Health, Education, and Literacy

There has been remarkable progress in health and education. Assam will soon boast the largest network of cancer care in South Asia with 15 hospitals under construction. Mizoram achieved functional literacy in May 2025, becoming the first state in India to do so. North-Eastern District SDG Index and dashboards facilitate proper measurement of social progress to enable data-driven governance and focused interventions.

Cultural Revival and Tourism

The Northeast is not only playing catch-up on its economic scorecard, it is reclaiming its cultural story. UNESCO recognition of Moidams, protection of Rani Gaidinliu’s legacy, and designating Sivasagar as an iconic heritage destination underscore the richness of the region’s cultural heritage. Handloom and handicraft initiatives through NEHHDC, as e-commerce websites and mobile sales points, are making sure that traditional craft touches base with rising markets, creating livelihoods while preserving identity.

My Perspective

The Northeast is no longer on the margins of India’s story, it is now at its center. Through policy leadership, record expenditure in budgets, robust infrastructure, and private sector entry, the region is emerging as a hotbed of inclusive growth. From hydroelectric power to organic farming, from skill development to conservation of cultural heritage, the Northeast is indicative of the potential of India’s “Act East” policy.

With the region integrating more into domestic and global markets, its trajectory sets an example for growth that balances economic vibrancy, social inclusiveness, and strategic significance. The Northeast is not just rising; it is leading, and through the process, shaping India’s future as a strong, inclusive, and integrated country.
